Social Media News of the Week: August 29, 2011

Last week was all about the crazy weather and with hurricane Irene still causing damage along the East Coast over the weekend it was still being talked about Monday. Twitter was all a buzz about the storm and someone even created a hurricane Irene Twitter account.

In my opinion the storm that caused the most disasters was this years MTV Video  Music Awards that aired Sunday night. The invitation to attend has to say “Attire: Customes Only” because the outfits were out of control. Lady Gaga came as a man, Beyonce announced her pregnancy and Niki Minaj wore a mask while carry stuffed animals on a chain all night!

It took me a few days to recover from the stupidity that the music industry has turned into and turn my attention to something way more important, football. Thursday was the start of the college football season and I’m patiently (ok not so patiently) waiting for my teams first game tomorrow! The NFL is making a techy move by replacing their playbooks with iPads. I’m sure this will move into college football sooner than later.

Football might be my big plans for the long Labor Day (end of summer) weekend but All Facebook can tell you what everyone else is doing this holiday! We want to hear what your big plans are!

The Oscars

The social media universe was all about the Oscars at the beginning of the week. Was “The Social Network” robbed? Did Anne Hathaway knock it out of the park as co-host? Was James Franco high the whole show? I’m not sure if Mashable genuinely felt like “The Social Network” was the best movie of the year or if they just loved the fact that it was a movie about technology, creativity and the start of a social media phenomenon.  Either way it was apparent that they were shocked by the decision because of their blogs on the topic.

I enjoyed “The Social Network” immensely but after seeing all the films that were nominated, the decision was clear: “The King’s Speech” was overall a superior film. I know there are plenty of people who disagree but they are the same people who would rather have given Lady GaGa Album of the year over Arcade Fire. And let’s be honest. I will never trust those people’s taste.

More Facebook Changes

Supposedly, Tuesdays are the worst day for an announcement via social media but that was the day that most of us heard about the Facebook “like” upgrades. Later in the week Facebook made even more changes to its comments plug-in as well!

iPad2

Apple CEO Steve Jobs took a time out from his medical leave to announce the iPad2 and it’s amazing. Two cameras, thinner device, FaceTime and the magnetic cover, I mean really what could be better? I’m hoping this will be my birthday present. If not from my family maybe a present to myself?!

Charlie Sheen

What could be bigger than the release of the iPad2? None other than Two and Half Men’s, Charlie Sheen. He’s appeared on several radio shows, TV spots and interviewed with Today three mornings in a row. Twitter has been crazy with hashtags derived from Sheen’s decent into madness such as #WINNING, #tigerblood and #teamsheen. If you aren’t already following Charlie (@charliesheen) on Twitter it’s a must do for your weekend entertainment!

The Most Wanted Christmas Gift

It was my very first Social Media Gift of the Week choice and I know it’s on many Christmas Lists this year. I’m talking about the all-mighty iPad.

When Christmas morning rolls around and you open up that iPad, you’ll probably be thinking about how awesome you are now and how jealous all your friends will be, but what you might not think about is how your gift is influencing web applications.

Check out this list of new web apps from the recently launched Chrome Web Store compared to their iPad app counterparts.

Ahh Paris!

I would have loved to attended the LeWeb Conference in Paris this week to hear Dennis Crowley of Foursquare, Marissa Mayer from Google and SVP David Ko of Zynga speak. I have a thing for Foursquare, love my Gmail and Android, but I’m not interested in very many games.

I admit that I had a Sega Genesis (for those too young to remember those; it was before PS1, 2 or3) and played Aladdin and Ren & Stimpy a good bit. I also grew up playing Where in the World is Carmen SanDiego, but if it came down to hanging out with friends or playing outside, the games were history.

Seeing how many of my now much older friends play FarmVille, MobWars and most recently CityVille, I knew that Zynga had something! CityVille, which just started one week ago, has three million daily active users already. Can you believe that?

At the LeWeb conference, Ko mentioned their increased interest in seeing this grow into mobile gaming, as well, and I feel that’s the sentiment everywhere with social media. If a company can mix gaming, social media and mobile into the perfect cocktail to make money, I would drink the juice!

2011 will bring many new trends in social media. What are your thoughts on the coming trends?

What’s on Your Black Friday List?

This morning the stores were flooded with people trying to find the perfect deal. I’m personally waiting for Cyber Monday to do some shopping but I’ve already heard from friends who benefited from the great price cuts.

This season it appears to be all about the techy gadgets! This should be no surprise with everyone from 6-year-old children to grandparents asking for the iPad this year. Beyond that, you have the Kindle and other ereaders, iPod Touch, some great deals on laptops and several different Android devices.

Marketing Daily is predicting that people will spend more money this year on gadgets than they will on travel! Do you think this is true and what’s on your holiday wish list?

The Mobile Performance

As I’ve said in the past, I love music! I’m also an Apple fan and when you put these two loves together you get some great videos! Here are some fun videos provided by Mashable of talented iPad and iPhone musicians. Enjoy!

MTV Might Actually Play Music Again

Who doesn’t love Unplugged on MTV? Growing up, it was a regularly scheduled show and then it changed into a special occasion show and now is an online phenomenon! The wonderful thing about Unplugged is it allowed the audience to see their favorite musicians in a totally different light: acoustic!

Now Unplugged has partnered with Starburst to bring more live music to MTV, well, to MTV.com, that is! They will run Unplugged online now and start to get social media involved by promoting viewing parties via Twitter and Facebook!

How many of you watch TV online already?

The 1st iPad Record

Gorillaz front man, Damon Albarn, has recorded their next album while touring for their current record, Plastic Beach. This is exciting for the techies in all of us to see how many awesome things the iPad can do!

Even though Plastic Beach was just released this year, the new album should be out before Christmas! Could this change the music industry?

Deals Deals Deals

Groupon and eBay are the newest of partnerships and it seems like a great fit.  Groupons will now show up when you are searching for those items you wish you could bid on. What’s even better is that eBay members will earn 5% of purchased Groupons in eBay bucks.

This will obviously be a tremendous amount of exposure for Groupon and a great way to get eBay users interested with an incentive.

Who else should Groupon partner with?

What’s Going on with Digg?

It seems like ever since Digg tried out a revamped new site things have just not been going well for the social news site. This week they’ve announced that they are significantly reducing their number of employees from 67 to 42 and even management could be uprooted.

Do you think the Digg CEO is right in taking the company back to  “start-up” mode?

Brilliant Gift of the Week

In honor of the holidays and all the great “techy” gifts out there, I’ve decided to showcase one gift a week until Christmas that I know any social media nerd would love!

Apple is providing free iPad engravings and I think this is the perfect way to personalize a gift that is already on many people’s lists! I’m hoping Santa will leave me an engraved iPad under my tree that says, “You Might be Naughty but This iPad is All The Nice You Need!”

Tailgate Domination

My fellow football fanatics understand that the tailgate is just as important as the game itself. You want to have plenty of variety, something for everyone, and you want the food to be substantial in order to stay full during the whole game. I realized quickly that the best food to do this was the heavenly avocado!

My family makes homemade guacamole for every game but Hass Avocados are letting football fans know you can make more than guac with this healthy fruit! They are putting together a contest for interesting tailgate recipes using their avocados and employing social media to promote it. You can submit your recipes on their website, through a blog or in a video. The winner will receive four tickets to The Rose Bowl!

Studying Made Easy

For those of you who’ve already taken the SAT, be prepared to be jealous! I remember taking the six-week Kaplan course and the endless hours of studying on weekends when all I wanted to do was go hang out with friends. Now Kaplan and gaming company Aspyr Media have taken SAT prep to your iPhone and iPad!

They cover the three basics — reading, writing and math — and it’s all in a gaming format. What’s next? College via iPad?

My Favorite Things

1. College Football: The 2010 football season has begun and tonight I will be attending my team’s first game of the season. For those of you who are fellow college football fans, you understand that a game is like a religious experience!

George Aiello is one of those guys who understands my passion for this hard hitting sport. He started out writing articles about a high school football team and now he is the senior vice president of public relations for the NFL.

So how does this relate to social media? Aiello is on the ball when it comes to spreading the word about the NFL. He’s active on Facebook and his Twitter followers usually hear important news of stats before anyone else! He has also been recognized for being extremely interactive with fans, even tweeting to them from the press box.

It ‘s obvious that Mr. Aiello is a lover of football but he didn’t know all those years ago that he would be a lover of social media too. What are you passionate about that you share through social media?

2. Wine and Coffee: These are the two drinks that get me moving in the morning and help me to relax at night. They are delicious and it’s always fun to try the newest grape or bean. I’ve heard they are healthy too, in moderation of course!

QR Codes are making it easier for winos everywhere to find that perfect bottle. Cellar Key and Lion Nathan Wine Group have partnered up to put QR codes on bottles of wine so buyers can scan with their smart phone and pull up interesting information about the specific wine. Your phone will help you pair your wine with the best meal, show you videos on the vineyard and answer your questions. How simple!

Starbucks and Blackberry have just released an application that makes buying coffee even easier (wait, was it even hard in the first place?). You can now get your Starbucks card on your mobile device. It is only available in select stores but the app will help you locate nearby Starbucks, manage your rewards, add money to your card and even pay for your drink of choice. Anyone out there already used this?

3. Social Media: Obviously I have a passion for social media and have become quite a nerd in the process! Today when I opened up Mashable, I was so excited and upset about this article on Twitter’s new iPad application.

I love Twitter and have enjoyed watching it grow and expand over the past few years. This new app for the iPad is pretty amazing and makes using Twitter look so, well, fun! They have custom-designed many of the features to fit the larger screen of the iPad and also made navigating through tweets, photos, videos and external links extremely smooth.

Oh, in case you were wondering, the only reason I was upset is because I don’t have an iPad yet. Don’t worry Apple, I will soon!

No one puts social media in the corner! Dell Inc. incorporated a social media team into their payroll in 2006 and they continue to believe that social media is vital for any company and here’s why.

LinkedIn adds familiar features such as likes, follows and group discussions to their network. Do you think these changes will help LinkedIn compete with other social media outlets?

The iPad is still H-O-T, HOT! Apple has sold more than three million devices in the past three months. How many of you want the iPad and for those lucky enough to already own one, what’s your favorite feature?
