Social Media News of the Week: August 29, 2011

Last week was all about the crazy weather and with hurricane Irene still causing damage along the East Coast over the weekend it was still being talked about Monday. Twitter was all a buzz about the storm and someone even created a hurricane Irene Twitter account.

In my opinion the storm that caused the most disasters was this years MTV Video  Music Awards that aired Sunday night. The invitation to attend has to say “Attire: Customes Only” because the outfits were out of control. Lady Gaga came as a man, Beyonce announced her pregnancy and Niki Minaj wore a mask while carry stuffed animals on a chain all night!

It took me a few days to recover from the stupidity that the music industry has turned into and turn my attention to something way more important, football. Thursday was the start of the college football season and I’m patiently (ok not so patiently) waiting for my teams first game tomorrow! The NFL is making a techy move by replacing their playbooks with iPads. I’m sure this will move into college football sooner than later.

Football might be my big plans for the long Labor Day (end of summer) weekend but All Facebook can tell you what everyone else is doing this holiday! We want to hear what your big plans are!

Viewers Choice

How would you feel about having being able to pick the shows that aired on TV? Well, MTV did just that by giving viewers the choice to air the indie horror film, Savage County. Eventful had the trailer on their website, and after it played, there was a DEMAND IT link that you could click on if you wanted to see the whole movie air on MTV 2 on October 7, 2010.

100,000 people needed to demand the movie and they reached that goal within a month and a half. This is just the beginning of the “demand it” feature but it seems to be a success so far for MTV.

What’s a better way to kick-start the Halloween season than with a horror film? Will you watch it?

Rules of the Road

I’m sure everyone has seen that guy drive out of the gas station with his gas tank open or his newly bought bottle of water on the roof of the car. This happens all the time, but there was no real way to inform the drive until Bump.com! They’ve created a social network that uses your license plate as your username.

It might sound a little creepy at first but check out this video from Mashable for all the neat ways it could help drivers everywhere!

And the Winner Is…

Hooray for social media! We can now claim an Emmy-winning campaign. The 2010 Emmy for Outstanding Commercial went to “The Man Your Man Could Smell Like” for Old Spice. Ad agency Wieden + Kennedy’s Old Spice campaign made big news recently when they turned to YouTube and other social networking sites to send private video messages to their consumers. This campaign was genius (in my opinion) and the Emmy is well deserved! (I’m on a horse, winning an Emmy)

Is Dating Just a Game?

Social gaming has been gaining tons of momentum and MTV is jumping on the bandwagon. Earlier this month they released a Jersey Shore game and now they are releasing a dating game, I Woo You. The dating game is fairly simple.  You basically create an avatar and meet other people in the site. The unique part is that you can meet MTV reality stars in the game, and your communication with the cast members is real! If you can’t find a date Friday night, will you consider this game instead?

Watch out Samantha Ronson, Here Comes Gabi Gregg

Last night, MTV announced the winner of their first ever Twitter Jockey competition, @gabifresh. Gabi Gregg will be the face of their social media campaigns, and her new position comes with a $100,000 a year paycheck. Not bad, huh? Gregg started out as a Detroit-based, plus-sized fashion blogger and now she will be interviewing celebs at the MTV Movie Awards and the VMA’s (tweeting all the while, of course). You can follow Gabi Gregg now on Twitter @mtvtj. Congrats girl!

Twitter’s Just What the Doctor Ordered

There’s been a lot of talk recently about whether not it would be appropriate for doctors to venture into social media. While some feel this would be a huge HIPPA violation, others are making the very valid point that social media is where the patients are spending the most time and doctors should be there.  The Mayo Clinic has heard this request and is starting to give social media courses to doctors and interested hospitals on the how to’s of Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and blogging. If you’re interested, check out this article from American Medical News.

Ask the Lonely

Remember the movie “You’ve Got Mail”? Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan made chat rooms and anonymous emails appear romantic and not creepy — a talent, I must say! It’s been 12 years since that movie warmed the hearts of Internet geeks everywhere and now might be the perfect time for a sequel. Invisible Note is the perfect combination of Chatroulette and You’ve Got Mail. It allows you to connect with strangers through email. But I’m not quite sure I’m ready to star in “You’ve Got Mail 2”, are you?

Leave the Keychain Behind

“Do you have your CVS ExtraCare card?” This phrase I love and hate. Love because I knowam about to save money, hate because it is going to take forever to find the right membership card on my keychain. Cardstar is a smart phone app for iPhone and Android users that keeps all your loyalty cards in one place on your mobile device! What’s even better is now you can “check in” on Foursquare through this app, as well. This will help companies to better understand their loyal customers’ habits but it will also be an easy reminder for you to check in!

Bump Me!

This mobile app is probably the easiest way to share information with your friends by simply bumping your phones together. They just released their newest version which will allow you to bump with friends  to connect with them on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. I can’t find the updated Bump 2.0 in my Android marketplace but for all my iPhone-using friends here it is! Now if Bump/Verizon/AT&T would only allow Android users and iPhone users to bump each other, I would be a happy little “mobile” camper!

Mindless Fun

We all have those after work rituals whether it be the gym, a nice walk or the long commute home. There’s something all these routines have in common: time to NOT THINK! I love my job, could not ask for anything better, but when I want to turn off my work brain, I just turn on MTV. It’s a guilty pleasure and this week Jersey Shore will be back for their second season, full of fist pumping, tanning, Snookie and The Situation!

MTV has used social media and mobile devices to promote the new season. Today they released a Facebook game and iPhone app that allows you to navigate through a cartoon Jersey Shore world. Will you play, or more importantly, will you fist pump?

Foursquare Hits Another Milestone

The location-based social networking site reached 100 million check-ins yesterday (is there a badge for that?)! They’re recording around one million check-ins a day and have seen tremendous growth in recent months! With Foursquare in talks with major search engines, this once again proves that geolocation is the next big thing!

Social Media and Street Food, A Perfect Pair

I might be the only “adult” in America who will admit to watching MTV’s Teen Mom, and loving it! My favorite mom is Maci, her always unemployed ex-boyfriend Ryan and their adorable son, Bentley. Ryan’s dad tried several times last season to find him a job in construction, truck driving and even as a hot dog vender. After watching this video from Mashable, Ryan’s dad might be on to something with street food!
